What is the NTSE?

The National Talent Search Examination (NTSE) is a national level scholarship program in India to identify and nurture talented students. It honours and helps talented students by providing financial assistance in the form of a monthly scholarship for the entire academic career. The scheme's official name is National Science Talent Search (NSTS), and is open to students of Indian nationality only. Students studying in Class VIII and Class X standard are eligible to appear for the selection process. As it is organized by an official body (NCERT), it is widely regarded as the most prestigious examination at high school level in India. NTSE currently is conducted at two levels i.e. at (a) Class VIII and (b) Class X. Students of Class VIII and X are eligible to appear for the respective Class VIII and Stage I examination conducted by the respective States/UTs in which the schools are located.

The NCERT has recently announced some changes in the scheme. "The next National Talent Search examination will be held at the end of Class VIII. However, the NCERT will conduct two more NTS examinations for the students reaching class X.

There is a two-stage selection process for award of scholarship. For StageI, selection will be done by States/UTs through the written examination. Each State/Union Territory has been allotted a quota to recommend a specific number of candidates for the StageII examination, the details of which are available on NCERT website (http;//www.ncertnic.in/sites/nts/talent.htm). Students who clear StagelI will be eligible to appear for Stage II examination conducted by NCERT.


Why should I appear in the NTSE?
NTSE is one of the oldest and most prestigious scholarship exams in India. An NTSE scholar commands tremendous respect in the society. Around 1000 scholarship are awarded for each group of students appearing for Class VIII and ClassX examinations. The pattern of written examination for Class VIII and X will be common, namely

Stage I examination at the State/UT level will comprise two parts, namely (a) Mental Ability Test (MAT) and (b) Scholastic Ability Test (SAT) covering social sciences, sciences and mathematics.

Stage II examination at the National level will comprise (a) Mental Ability Test (MAT), and (b) Scholastic Ability Test (SAT) covering social sciences, sciences and mathematics, (c) Interview.

Only those candidates who clear the written examination at the National Level will be invited for interview.

When & How do I prepare for NTSE?

As per the announcement made by NCERT the next NTSE will be held at the end of Class VIII. Hence, it is essential students start preparing at least from the beginning of Class VIII. Students should focus on clearing their fundamentals and attempting a lot of practice tests.
